Have you ever been in a situation in which someone makes the remark, "I don't know why anyone would want to go to church. Church is nothing but a bunch of hypocrites."? When hearing this, be sure to remark back, "Well then you should really go because you would fit in." It's the perfect comeback the next time someone says that about church.
Really it's true. Church is made up of a bunch of hypocrites who can't act out what the church teaches. Each week we sit in church as a bunch of sinners. We are sinners on the road to recovery. In fact, just like an alcoholics at an AA meeting in which the first thing to do is admit that one is an alcoholic, we immediately confess that we are sinful and unclean in thought, word, deed, and the things we leave undone.
Church is a place of healing and a place of cleaning up our act. And only when recognizing that Jesus is the means to repair ourselves and bring us to the state that God intended when creating us will we fully be on that road to recovery. Only then would we recognize that the kingdom of God is like finding a buried treasure in a field, so we sell everything we own to purchase that field.
